School Visits
At West Wickham Allotments you will find lots of enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about sharing their love of growing fresh fruit and vegetables, especially with children and young people.
A recent survey suggested that less than a third of primary school-aged children could identify a courgette or a beetroot, two vegetables that are typically found in abundance on our plots! Equally, we know the extent to which many schools are now growing fruit and vegetables with their pupils, helping them to develop an understanding of where food comes from, and importantly allowing them to make a connection with the meal on their plate. It is also proven to encourage curiosity, and a more adventurous attitude when it comes to trying new vegetables – something any parent would welcome.
With this in mind, we are delighted to have developed a successful schools’ programme, whereby we can host small groups of children on site to understand how we grow food and what it looks like. These sessions will also typically involve a visit to our bee hives and a talk about the important role of bees as honey-makers and pollinators.
